THE CURRICULUM AT RAWCLIFFE BRIDGE PRIMARY SCHOOL

The Staff aim to deliver a broad, balanced and enjoyable curriculum meeting the requirements of the National Curriculum 2014, through high quality teaching and learning. We seek to provide a curriculum which enables children to gain the confidence, knowledge and skills to become independent and aspirational learners.

We provide rich and relevant new experiences and we like to give children the opportunity to follow their own lines of enquiry, develop projects and ideas, and to work well with others. We make sure each child has an equal opportunity to reach their potential by involving them in dialogue and feedback with staff which enables us to understand how our children learn best. We keep a careful eye on our children’s progress and well-being and adapt our provision and support to meet their needs.

Through a thematic approach, the curriculum encompasses English, Mathematics, Science, Computing, Design and Technology, Art, Religious Education, Geography, History, Music, Physical Education, French, Personal, Social, Health Education and Citizenship.

We extend our children’s experiences through visits and cluster school activities and by welcoming frequent and varied visitors to school.

KS1 Reading & Phonics Programmes

The teaching of phonics in the school is supported by the use of ‘Letters & Sounds’ and throughout KS1 our children enjoy using the Oxford Reading Tree reading scheme.

Letters and SoundsLetters and Sounds is a phonic resource published by the DfE.  It aims to build children’s speaking and listening skills in their own right as well as to prepare children for learning to read by developing their phonic knowledge and skills.  It sets out a detailed and systematic programme for teaching phonic skills for children starting by the age of five, with the aim of them becoming fluent readers by age seven.

Foundation Stage

The Early Years Foundation Stage Framework (EYFS) sets out the learning and development stages for children as they grow from birth to five years. For those working in the early years – whether in a nursery, pre-school, a childminder or in a reception class in school – the EYFS outlines what they need to do to support your child.

The link below provides a useful guide to help you as a parent/carer* find out more about how your child is learning and developing during their first five years, in relation to the EYFS. Children develop more rapidly during the first five years of their lives than at any other time. This booklet has been written to help you as a parent know what to expect during these vitally important years by focusing on the seven areas of learning and development which are covered in the EYFS.

Spring Term

This term we have been taking part in a whole school topic based on dinosaurs and the ‘Secrets Beneath our Feet.’ Just look at some of the photos on the school blog to see what fun we’ve been having!

In Spring II, Years 4, 5 and 6 will be learning all about ‘Mexico and the Mayans’, Years 2 and 3 about ‘Sensational Safaris’ and the EYFS ‘Once Upon a Time’
